White Pines after an ice storm

A Christmas Tree

Little seedling-one foot tall
Planted so late in the fall-
One year later, can't you be
Tall enough for a Christmas tree?

No, I'm not really so late-
Do you think you can wait?
I'll be here for another year-
I'm two feet tall now, my dear!

Little tree, now you are three
Are you tall enough for me?
No, but soon I'll be four-
Then I'll grow a little more!

Now you are five, your branches alive
Are you tall enough, my Christmas tree?
No, but I am getting there-
Now just you wait and see!

Tall, tall tree, I see you are six-
You're tall enough for me!
Yes, I've finally grown up-
I'll be your Christmas tree!
Merry Christmas to thee!

But if you can wait, I'll soon be eight-
TOO LATE-you're in the water by the gate!
